Stephen Briscoe manages our office in the British Virgin Islands having recently relocated there after spending almost two decades working on various restructuring and corporate advisory related assignments in Hong Kong. Our British Virgin Island’s office provides the same suite of services provided in the Cayman Islands including acting as Registered Agents, independent directors, and liquidators of solvent and insolvent companies.
Stephen has worked full-time on corporate recovery and corporate advisory assignments since 1973. He worked for 11 years for the Official Receiver in the United Kingdom before moving into private practice where he gained considerable experience in financial investigations, liquidations and trading receiverships, particularly in the manufacturing, service and leisure industries.
He worked in Hong Kong between early 1997 and mid-2016 where he advised foreign investors on numerous occasions to assist in creating value from distressed investments in Sino-Foreign Equity Joint Ventures and Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprises in the PRC.
Stephen has acted as a director of a Cayman based private equity fund appointed by the limited partners where his key role was to safeguard the interests of the LPs following the breakdown of the relationship with the investment manager and to investigate allegations of misfeasance.
He has also acted in a number of cross-border related assignments involving Hong Kong and Caribbean jurisdictions including Cayman, BVI and Nevis. His experience of Asia and his deep understanding of the latest developments in cross-border issues make him well placed to offer stakeholders a rare insight into the legal, practical and cultural issues they face when dealing with distressed and other problematic situations in the far East.
Stephen is licensed by the BVI Financial Services Commission to act as a court-appointed liquidator. He is the co-author of the Hong Kong Corporate Insolvency Manual, now in its third edition and was one of the course directors of the Hong Kong Insolvency Diploma course established and operated by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a member of INSOL International and the Restructuring and Insolvency Specialists Association in the BVI and is also the chair of the editorial board of the monthly INSOL Electronic Newsletter.
